Penn State Hershey College of Medicine and Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center
In 1963, The M. S. Hershey Foundation offered $50 million to The Pennsylvania State University to establish a medical school in Hershey. With this grant and $21.3 million from the U.S. Public Health Service, the University built a medical school, teaching hospital, and research center. Ground was broken in 1966 and Penn State's College of Medicine opened its doors to the first class of students in 1967 and Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center accepted the first patients in 1970.

- The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania awarded PSMSH 41 projects totaling over $18.5 million in research funding
- Over the past 20 years, PSHMC has experienced consistent increases in research awards, from $16.8 million in 1984 to over $100 million in 2005
- In 2005, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issued PSHMC seven patents, reviewed 24 applications for 30 separate inventions and executed four licenses.
- More than 1,100 students and residents are enrolled at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and College of Medicine
- In 2006, the Pennsylvania State University ranked ninth in the country in research expenditures.
